ACHARYA PRAFULLA CHANDRA RAY MEMORIAL AWARD

Acharya Prafulla Chandra Ray (1861–1944) was a pioneering Indian chemist, widely regarded as the "Father of Indian Chemistry." His contributions to science, particularly in the field of chemistry, were groundbreaking and laid the foundation for modern scientific research in India. He is best known for founding Bengal Chemical and Pharmaceutical Works in 1892, India's first pharmaceutical company, which marked a significant step towards self-reliance in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Ray's most notable scientific achievement was the discovery of Mercurous Nitrite in 1896, which earned him international recognition. He also made significant strides in the study of arsenic poisoning and developed methods to detect and treat it, addressing a major health issue in Bengal. Ray was not only an accomplished scientist but also a passionate educator, inspiring generations of students at the University of Calcutta and advocating for the importance of scientific research in India. In addition to his scientific work, he authored several influential texts, including "The History of Hindu Chemistry," which documented India's ancient contributions to chemistry. Throughout his life, Ray worked to promote scientific self-sufficiency and was a nationalist who believed that India’s progress lay in embracing both traditional knowledge and modern scientific advancements. His legacy continues to inspire Indian scientists and entrepreneurs to this day.
With all due respect, we wish to dedicate the Indian Pharma Summit 2026 to the late Acharya Prafulla Chandra Ray for his significant contributions to society and for being the driving force behind many of the knowledge discoveries we benefit from today.
